Romy Castro
From 18 June to 27 August 2022 and as part of the France-Portugal 2022 Season, Mémoire de l'Avenir presents A TERRA COMO ACONTECIMENTO (THE EARTH AS EVENT), a monographic exhibition by the Portuguese artist and researcher Romy Castro.
After some sixty exhibitions around the world and a career spanning more than forty years, Romy Castro takes over the Mémoire de l'Avenir exhibition space to explore the issues of the Earth as a living space, through a selection of works from her most recent production, A Terra Como Acontecimento, a protean ensemble which, like our universe, retracts and expands according to the materials, discoveries and spaces encountered by the artist.
Romy Castro delivers the fruit of a deep philosophical reflection on an Earth-matter revealed as an event, a word, an expression, an active force, the primary actor of a dialogue to which the artist invites us.

Pour nous le temps primitif est le temps vibré.
La matière existe dans un temps vibré et seulement dans un temps vibré.
Au repos même, elle a de l'énergie parce qu'elle repose sur le temps vibré.

The non-exhaustive exhibition chooses to highlight the video creations A Terra como Acontecimento I and II; the first (2012), a matrix material from which Romy Castro's aesthetic and geophilosophical research has been unfolding since 2012, draws on the artist's own thinking as well as that of J.A. Bragança de Miranda. It takes the form of a vibratory essay, an exploration of matter-dark and matter-light, sounded from noises produced by the Earth and collected by the artist.
The second video piece (2021) extends the experiment towards new pictorial compositions in tryptic and colour. The introduction of written language, infiltrated by the artist's own thoughts as well as those of Carl Sagan, Gilles Deleuze, Félix Guattari and J.A. Bragança de Miranda, puts philosophical questions and lively, pulsating materiality in dialogue. A research on space and territory that questions its limits, contours and its points of permeability with the rest of the living.
