Madam, can I call you sir? was a question asked by a man to Yvette Chassagne
(1922-2007), a committed woman, a feminist and a first woman Prefect of France. It was referring to her brilliant career, during which she has often been accused of taking the place of Men... She answered, Yes you may, and I will call you Madam…
This play of words refers obviously to the professional legitimacy of women; it questions the roles that have been traditionally attributed to one gender or another, in the professional and in the private sphere.
It also opens the debate on the fact that the feminine and masculine trades are part of each and every being, as the possibility of expressing one or the other at different moments or activities of life. This fact has often understood and expressed in various societies
Around the International Women’s month on March, Mémoire de l’Avenir is launching a call for applications to present, as part of its exhibition Madam, can I call you sir? - yes you may, and I will call you Madam, artistic projects that question the relations between men and women as on the place of women in society.
The exhibition will run from February 24 to March 24, 2018.
