essay on the work of Avivit Segal by Margalit Berriet
Avivit Segal is a multidisciplinary artist, born in 1970. She lives and works in Israel.
As human beings, we are intrinsically intermingled with that which is cyclical. The systems, both cultural and natural, that govern our behaviours and our becoming are bound by the founding principle of repetition. This, of course, can be said of all forms of living.
From the seasons of planting and harvesting to the cycle of live and death, this ebb and flow from renewal to decay and back again, can be seen as that which upholds all of observable reality. In current times, the absolute interrelatedness of the Living – to which humankind is no exception – stands as perhaps the most critical matter to address and artistic, scientific and philosophical discourse remain our most viable sources in offering the clues to transform the ways in which we, as experiential creatures, engage physically and intellectually with a reality which is both in constant flux and in an eternal state of return.
Through entering a dialogue with wheat, flour, dough and all its transformations in her latest works, Avivit Segal strips down her artistic practice to a minimalist approach, in which the artist’s displaces his position from the pro-active creator or unilateral doer to that of the intermediate link - they through which energies, elements, and materials may converge, communicate and transmute. Evacuating the fixed notions of authorship and technique, the works are the result of a practice entirely concerned with gesture, observation, relation and break open the conventional gallery which - more than a place to see - becomes a space for diving into memory, sensation, and contemplation.
