'Return to Django' is a new title from the global music project Orchestra of Samples by artists Addictive TV.
For the project, Addictive TV created new music by sampling hundreds of musicians they filmed improvising on all manner of instruments around the world, from traditional to newly-invented. A vast undertaking, Orchestra of Samples grew out of Addictive TV’s much-lauded live audiovisual shows, and whilst touring internationally in pre-Covid times, the project became a vital part of their travels.
The track ‘Return of Django’ features well known French artist DJ Zebra on guitar alongside Daniel Correa‘s gaita flute recorded in Colombia. The enigmatic ‘wild west movie’ vibe is driven by the slow beating congas of Cyrille Lecoq and the strange rotating ‘blow pipes’ invented by musician Nicolas Bras, both recorded in France. Samples recorded in the UK include world renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie on ethereal sounding crotales and Kat Richmond on violin, alongside further percussion recorded in Brazil and Colombia.

Digital artists Addictive TV are known for their innovative performances and use of audio-video sampling. They were described by American magazine Live Design as “inspiring an entire generation of artists exploring the crossover between audio and visual mediums” and Huff Post said of them “Addictive TV create the perfect integration of audio and visual technologies in their thrilling live shows”. They’ve performed in over 50 countries now, including at Russia’s Erarta Museum in St Petersburg, Mexico City’s Centro Nacional de las Artes and the Pompidou Centre in Paris. They’ve had their work exhibited at New York’s Museum of Moving Image and Shanghai’s Museum of Contemporary Art and have created work for the likes of Greenpeace, Arte, EA Games, and Hollywood studios Paramount Pictures, Universal and 20th Century Fox. Most recently they were commissioned to create work for London’s Royal Docks and both the London Borough of Culture 2019 and 2020.

WISSAL inscribes the dance in the heart of a double space: resonance of the urban landscape, echo of the graphic line. Memory of a secret movement, sometimes repressed, that the artist must allow to emerge from her daily gestures. Alexia Traore questions her place of life, the 18th district of Paris seen by the photographer Behlole Mushtaq, in perspective with the works of RamZ, street artist with whom she has been collaborating for several years. Horizon lines, rails, bridges, answer to the abstraction of urban calligraphies. The improvised dance is born from the mineral, the metal, the memories carried by the streets and by the letters. As the gesture unfolds, the dance unfolds. And the images reflected on the body write an imaginary territory.

Dancer, choreographer, Alexia Traore develops a minimalist and poetic dance, woven from Egyptian, Tunisian and Afghan traditions. Far from the beaten track, her productions draw on the sources of traditional repertoires, celebrating their living essence. « My dance was born from cultures from which I did not come. Each of my steps, each of my shows pays homage to them ». A fusional link between dance and music runs through her creations.
As a visual artist, Alexia Traore also draws from and with the body: its history and its environment the materials and modes of expression of her research. She is using Installations, photographs, videos, sculptures...Her visual works explore movement, intimate and collective memory, and the complexity of the female experience. "The images, the colours that are born on paper, what the objects tell me is a continuity of my dance in another dimension".
