What are the boundaries?
Etymologically, a border line refers to the "front of an army," a "fortified place, facing the enemy." The first reference is after the warrior vocabulary. In any case, they translate the concept of limit to also geographical or territorial, political or cultural. Concerning ones identity: the limits make imagined concepts visible and concrete.
But boundaries are before all a confrontation with OTHERNESS, as a confrontation with the particularity and the alteration of the other. They question our ethical relationship to each other and with society, how to accommodate the other, from the perspective of mutual enrichment, how to approach the idea of a frontier let alone citizenship, exile and the painful news of the refugees?
A world without borders is it possible? Or these notions refer to a utopia of a Humanity that is finally assembled and lives without conflict? Is it not as well the fantasy that gave birth to imperialism and colonialism, a temptation for standardization that lead humanity to form of globalization? Consequently, are the borders responsible for acts of violence wars and? Perhaps border lines also express, beyond these political and economic circumstances, the right to individualism and diversities.
Because a borderline is primarily symbolic: it is initially our own inner limits of our finitude. The limit, a boundary is that which resists to us, it is difficult - but not impossible to overcome or to imagine. Going beyond limits is the exact same essence that drives Man into his own creativity, to art, to invention, and encourage oneself to always overcome his own boundaries. "In art is the border point," wrote Victor Hugo, rightly.
Man has been unceasingly experimenting with his own freedom and with his own proper limits, both, in his personal life, as within the community and within the large Society. Individually, the limits are as much physical and intangible, emotional or cultural. They can generate a sense of security or exasperation and frustration.
What happens there, when we reach the off limits?
Beyond Limits is where we can discover a new areas of freedom, create new territories, establish new relationships.
But, NOT in any case that freedom can be dissociated from the notions of equality and fraternity. As the awareness of these notions of Equality and Fraternity that give meaning to Liberty. Equality and Fraternity are the guarantors and the guardians of liberty for all.
We must therefore take-off the ambiguity prowling around the concept of limits, as they prohibits at the same time as they protect. And even more, borders invite us to an overrun, as borders require always to be overcome, by opening to new internal as external territories that have never been imagined before.
Man is fundamentally an aspiring being to liberty. While Liberty is constantly strained on a very thin line found between "inside / outside", between the "finite / infinite" as between margins, that are stretched to the horizon.
